Hi everyone,

I believed everyone has great experiences at the elderly home as I could see the happy faces of the elderly. It was an enriching experience as we can to interact with them. Even though not many elderly could speak in English, they are glad that we are there to accompany them. Intitally, we encountered problems communicating with them as some of them were either can't be bothered or they find it hard to interact with us. Some of the students were first-timers helping out at an old folks home, therefore they are quite scared at first. But eventually as the elderly began to share theirfeelings, we began to listen to their life stories.

We are also engaged in some arts and crafts such as colouring of animals and nature. We then allow the elderly to colour the pictures they like themselves. As some of them have weak hands, we help them by colouring their favourite animals for them. It was both an enjoyable experience for both elderly and the international students.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone for offering their time to help out in this meaningful event. And see you guys around soon!

Cheers,
Dennis Loo

IFG Engaging the Elderly

Dear International Students,

I am pleased to inform you that SIM-International Friendship Group (IFG) is presenting a first community service initiative by organising activities for the elderly. It will be an elderly home located at Bukit Panjang and it is a good opportunity for us to understand these elderly by talking to them.

Our activities include making some handicrafts such as cutting, tracing, pasting various artworks together with the elderly and presenting it to them. These senior citizens need our love and care, and by being there, they cherish the company and warmth we give them.

I would sincerely encourage and challenge you to make a difference in the society by first stepping out of your comfort zone and helping the needy. Ultimately, some things are not learnt in a classroom.
